Scanning equipment
It is much easier to digitise large volumes of bound material if the pages are turned automatically (after scanning). This type of high-volume scanners, also called robotic scanners, are currently being developed. Many books from the Special Collections cannot be laid flat open. To prevent these books from being damaged, they are placed on a book cradle and then scanned.
Result
Overall, the project will unlock 1.3 million unique pages of diverse size. In this way, a unique historical source in digital available for research into various aspects of the late 18th century culture. We of course hope that this project initiated for the unlocking of more material in the Special Collections of various institutes in the Netherlands.
